Cynicism as Tender Gesture
People mistake the cold eye for cruelty. In our work it is the opposite — an attempt to look at things so directly that the sentimentality burns off, and what remains is something raw enough to be true.
The Lily Records aesthetic has been described as bleak. We accept this description without agreeing with it. Bleakness implies an absence of care. What we practice is care stripped of its usual ornamentation — love without the flowers, without the flourish.
The cold eye is a form of respect. To look at something directly, without softening it for easier consumption, is to take it seriously. Our music videos do not comfort. They do not offer resolution. They offer only attention, sustained and undecorated.
This is what we mean when we call ourselves art-owned. Not that we own the art, but that the art makes its own demands — and we have agreed to meet them.
